Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter. Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight. Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine and champions at mixing drinks, who acquit the guilty for a bribe, but deny justice to the innocent.

Isaiah 5:20-23

APOLOGIZING FOR THE BIBLE AT GENERAL MILLS:

General Mills, a company that has long been associated with providing our nation with quality food products, has been franticly apologizing for including a free CD-ROM in more than twelve million boxes of cereal. The reason for this frenzied act of contrition was that the CD-ROM included software of the Bible. In this politically-correct age, a Bible without an apology just wouldn't be suitable. While it is not advertised on the company's cereal boxes, the Bible is one of many resources contained on the cereal software giveaway. General Mills officials said the Bible was included on the CD-ROM without their knowledge. But the founder of the software maker that created it said officials did know it was included from the start.

Columnist Carl Limbacher responded by noting that General Mills' apology spree should not be surprising. "After all," he said, "prayer is banned in schools, God from the state motto of Ohio, references to Christmas from the public square, the Ten Commandments from court houses and so on." Mr. Limbacher hit the proverbial nail on the head. But the problem goes far deeper. As our nation continues to systematically expunge Christ from the public square, another disturbing trend - one in which Christ and Christians are fiercely denigrated - is simultaneously accelerating. Take, for example, many popular cable networks that have now authorized the use of the worst sorts of blasphemy to be broadcast over the national airwaves. Just a couple of years ago, this was not the case. These same networks that guard against racial slurs and vicious affronts to homosexuality - as they should - have allowed the name of the One millions of Americans hold dear to be blasphemed.

Plus, Christ has become depicted as a clownish fool on shows such as "South Park," "Saturday Night Live," "Late Night with Conan O'Brien," "God, the Devil and Bob" (now cancelled) and others. Remember, this is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords and the networks allow Him to be frequently mocked and ridiculed. In addition, the major television networks and the movie industry typically portray conservative people of faith as contemptible and insufferable villains. Look also at the National Endowment for the Art's funding (using taxpayer dollars) of terribly offensive "art" that purposely blasphemes the Christ of the Bible. When people of faith complain about this outrageous and hateful art, we are cast as the villains. And examine the hostile environment our nation's religious students routinely face when they simply attempt to express their faith.

So of course, in this hostile climate, it should indeed come as no surprise that a major company feels it must apologize for including the Bible in their cereal. Nevertheless, it is terribly disheartening that a historic company like General Mills would make such a decision. By the way General Mills has reacted, one would think they discovered that their product contained something as horrible as hard-core pornography. Then again, in this politically- correct age, a pornographic CD-ROM in a cereal box might actually be more cordially accepted than the Holy Scriptures.
